Low-Dose Rate Brachytherapy for Prostate Cancer Treatment

Braquiterapia tumores da prostata

Hospital da Luz Guimarães performed, for the first time, on May 18, a low-dose rate brachytherapy for treatment of a patient with prostate cancer.

This is a type of internal radiotherapy for curative purposes, where the radiation source is placed inside the tumour or in close proximity.

The intervention was executed by a multidisciplinary team integrating specialists in Urology (Nuno Tomada), Radiotherapy (André Soares) and Medical Physics (Alexandre Pereira).

Prostate brachytherapy is a minimally invasive treatment, with a reduced rate of complications that allows the patient a faster recovery. Additionally, the long-term results obtained (15 years) are identical to those obtained with radical prostatectomy.

Nuno Tomada also practices urology in Hospital da Luz units of Amarante, Arrábida, Póvoa de Varzim and Vila Real.
