Study on Cataract Surgery at Hospital da Luz Published in Specialty Journal
The Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, official publication of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), has recently published a study conducted by physicians of the Ophthalmology Service from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, based on the innovating experience developed in this unit in the scope of cataract surgery.
The paper – entitled “Comparative analysis of clinical outcomes of a monofocal and an extended-range-of-vision intraocular lens in eyes with previous myopic laser in situ keratomileusis” – has for authors Tiago Ferreira, Leyre Zebala Llano, Filomena Ribeiro (all from Hospital da Luz) and João Pinheiro (from Clínica Privada de Oftalmologia).
“Cataract surgery in patients with previous refractive surgery is a current challenge, with a predictable rise of cases in the Portuguese population. The avoidance of refractive surprises and loss of visual quality, in those cases, depends on the choice and precision of the intraocular lens calculation”, explains Filomena Ribeiro, the director of the Ophthalmology Service from Hospital da Luz Lisboa. The authors analysed the results obtained in 44 patients submitted to this type of surgery.
