HBA as European Training Centre in Infection Control
Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) was recognized as centre of excellence in infection control by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
After Hospital de S. João, in Oporto, HBA is the second hospital unit in Portugal to be recognized as collaborative centre by ESCMID, with competence to give and receive training in infection control to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals from all over the world.
Created in 1983, ESCMID is a non-governmental organization with headquarters in Basel (Switzerland), with the purpose of fighting infection, having for motto: “Promoting science, combating infection”. In that sense, it develops multiple educational initiatives and supports research projects viewing to improve clinical practices of prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Infection control and resistance to antimicrobials is a priority of Grupo Luz Saúde, that runs HBA. Since its opening, in February 2012, HBA integrates its own team in the area, coordinated by internist Carlos Palos – who represents Portugal in ESCMID Professionals Affairs Subcommittee and who participated in the elaboration of the European Training Program on Infection Prevention and Control of that organization.
In this scope, besides internships, via Hospital da Luz Learning Health, soon two educational events will be organized, integrated in the European Training Program on Infection Control, an initiative of ESCMID in partnership with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS): on April 7, the international congress “Improving antimicrobial prescription and infection control in the Emergency Room”, and on September 22 and 23, the Lisbon Autumn simulation course on infection control and antibiotic stewardship.
