Hospital da Luz Presents Experience in Cataract Surgery in International Congresses
A team of professionals from Hospital da Luz Lisboa Service of Ophthalmology participated in the international congress FacoElche, held in Elche (Alicante), between February 1 and 3, where it presented its experience on surgical technique and clinical research in cataract surgery. Participated, namely, Filomena Ribeiro (service director), Leyre Zabala Llano and Tiago Ferreira (ophthalmologists), Sofia Lopes Filipe (nurse responsible) and Catarina Relha (technician).
FacoElche is a scientific meeting dedicated to refractive surgery, which takes place annually since 1999, in the Spanish city of Elche. Filomena Ribeiro was a speaker in the discussion panels of the congress. The participants also had the opportunity to follow live-streamed surgeries performed at Hospital Universitário de Del Vinalopó (Elche), with the participation of Sofia Filipe, as instrumental nurse, and physicians Leyre Zabala Llano and Tiago Ferreira.

Research presented in Belgrade
Meanwhile, Filomena Ribeiro and Tiago Ferreira were invited speakers in the 22nd Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery – ESCRS.
There, they presented the results of the clinical research developed in the Ophthalmology Service from Hospital da Luz, in the treatment of astigmatism in cataract surgery – a theme on which they have already published, in 2017, six papers in renowned international scientific journals.
Intense scientific activity in 2017
These two events arise in the sequence of an intense scientific activity by the Service of Ophthalmology from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, in 2017. In fact, last year, this service’s professionals made 63 presentations in national and international congresses and registered 28 participations in the organization and moderation of meetings, courses and congresses.
Furthermore, they published 12 papers in internationally recognized magazines of the speciality, such as the Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, European Ophthalmic Review, PloS One, Med Hypothesis and Discov Innov Ophthalmol.
Additionally to this activity, the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology distinguished a paper authored by the whole team from Hospital da Luz Lisboa on the optimization of intraocular lens calculation in cataract surgery, which was considered the best work in the area of refractive implants.
