International Symposium on Hip Preservation Surgery

Simpósio internacional sobre cirurgia de preservação da anca

Hospital da Luz Lisboa will hold, on November 16 and 17, the third edition of the Lisbon International Hip Symposium, dedicated to the topic of hip preservation surgery.

Bi-annually organized by the unit of hip preservative surgery from Hospital da Luz Lisboa, this international gathering has the purpose of updating on hip pathology in young patients, as well as on the most advanced surgical techniques, counting with the participation of some of the top national and international specialists.

“In this third edition of the Lisbon International Hip Symposium, we will approach the relevant and current topic of the hip joint preservation”, explains Paulo Rego, the coordinator of the Orthopaedics Centre from Hospital da Luz Lisboa and organizer of the symposium.

Preservation surgery, “as an alternative to the concept of femoral hip joint replacement by total prosthesis”, hip deformities in children and young adults and preservation options will be the main topics in discussion. “With preservation surgery, we preserve the joint, give more quality of life to patients with complex hip deformities and allow, in a way, to delay degenerative alterations that may lead to joint replacement”, highlights Paulo Rego.

It is worth mentioning that some professionals from Hospital da Luz Lisboa have already long experience in the area and are especially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of hip pathology, the unit of hip preservation being considered a reference centre in this kind of procedure.

Along the two days of Lisbon International Hip Symposium, at Hospital da Luz Lisboa auditorium, specialty physicians and other health professionals interested in orthopaedics, including students, will have the opportunity to listen to 23 Portuguese and foreign specialists – including Reinhold Ganz (emeritus professor of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department of the University of Bern, being considered one of the world’s top experts in hip surgery) and Michael Millis (orthopaedic surgeon at the Children’s Boston Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School).

On the second day of the meeting, the participants will follow-up via videoconference a live streamed surgery performed at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, by the hip unit team.

The Lisbon International Hip Symposium will count with the scientific sponsorship of the Portuguese Association of Doctors (Hip Section), the Portuguese Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) and the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA).
