120 Students from Externato Marista Received BLS Training

Hospital da Luz Clínica da Amadora was this Monday, January 15, at Externato Marista de Lisboa, giving training in Basic Life Support (BLS) to 9th grade students.

The session was performed by Paulo Fonseca, nursing coordinator of this unit at Hospital da Luz, and was attended by 120 students.

Statistics indicate that, on average, one person suffers cardiorespiratory arrest every 90 seconds. The chances of survival depend on how promptly BLS manoeuvres are applied: thoracic compression alternated with ventilation of exhaled air (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) and placement in lateral safety position.

In this training initiative, besides a theoretical part where they learn to evaluate a situation of cardiorespiratory arrest, the students had the opportunity to practice BLS manoeuvres on mannequins.
