HBA Nursing Team Distinguished

The work presented by Hospital Beatriz Ângelo nursing team obtained the first prize in the Annual Course of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy for Nurses, which took place on November 16, in Ofir.

The poster, entitled “Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG): flowchart use in support of the intervention” – translates the observational retrospective study, made by the hospital’s nursing team, of 106 consultations made between November 2016 and October 2017 to patients, using this technique.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy consists in inserting a probe in the gastric cavity through the abdominal wall, with the help of endoscopy, to allow the administration of food, fluids and medication to patients that cannot ingest.

In this work, the HBA nursing team observed that “the examination of the patient using PEG probe with the support of the implemented database, allowed the standardization of healthcare, through the application of protocols of intervention, monitoring and evaluation of the efficacy of the interventions performed and continuing follow-up”.

Concluding, “healthcare provided with the collaboration of the patient and the informal caretakers contributed to an improvement of the quality of life and to the timely and systematic resolution of complications associated with the presence of a gastrostomy device”.
