Alexandre Ferreira , Hospital da Luz Lisboa gastroenterologist, concluded, last March, his doctorate degree in Medicine, in the clinical research speciality, at Nova Medical School. His doctoral thesis – entitled “Improving the Quality of Colonoscopy” – earned the unanimous approval of the jury and the highest rating. In the six papers developed for this thesis, Alexandre Ferreira studied the safety and optimization of colonoscopy efficacy in the detection of premalignant lesions , in particular sessile serrated lesions, with the purpose of further reducing the risk for patients of developing colon and rectal cancer. These studies were presented in national and international gatherings of gastroenterology and endoscopy, being also published in scientific journals, among them “Endoscopy” (the main publication in the area at world level). Hospital da Luz gastroenterologist since 2015, Alexandre Ferreira was distinguished in 2021 with the National Award of Gastroenterology by the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology, the most significant distinction in the area, precisely for his research on the use of technology in colonoscopy exams to detect colon and rectal cancer. He also received a Research Scholarship granted by the Portuguese Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SPED), in 2017.
