Hospital da Luz Vila Real will offer, between March 1 and June 30 , a special consultation service and upper abdominal echo Doppler, to screen for aortic aneurysm – a silent disease, potentially fatal, that affects mostly men over 60 and smokers (or ex-smokers). The aortic aneurysm : is an abnormal dilation of the main abdominal artery. The dilation can be gradual and silent, with a risk of rupture when reaching a 5 cm diameter or in case of specific anatomical characteristics; usually causes no symptoms; affects mostly men over 60 years of age and a present or previous history of smoking; has for main cause atherosclerosis (an inflammatory disease that generates deposition of fat and calcium in arterial walls). Because it is a silent and potentially fatal disease , the Vascular Surgery Service from Hospital da Luz Vila Real recommends, in line with the international medical guidelines, that all men over 60 and with a history of smoking should do a screening to detect aortic aneurysm, through an abdominal echo Doppler test. The echo Doppler is a non-invasive test, performed by ultrasound, that allows to evaluate the flow and rate of blood in the vessels. This special service offered by Hospital da Luz Vila Real – including a vascular surgery consultation and an upper abdominal echo Doppler – has a unit cost of 40 Euros (private price table).
