Hospital da Luz applied an innovative technique in cataract surgery for the first time on January 6, with implant of an XtraFocus Pinhole (Morcher GmbH) lens in a patient who can thus recover sight. The surgery, which took place without complications, was performed in Hospital da Luz Oeiras by ophthalmologists Tiago Bravo Ferreira and Filomena Ribeiro . The said lens allows patients with severe irregular astigmatism to regain vision . In the case of the patient that now had surgery, with cataract and keratoconus, this surgery was the only chance she could regain sight and even break free from the use of the hard contact lens she was used to. “ The first results are encouraging. A few minutes after this surgery, performed in ambulatory, the patient could see us and read the oximeter letters without any help ”, explains Filomena Ribeiro.
