The Portuguese Ministry of Health chose physician Cristina Valadas, director of Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) Endocrinology Service, to lead the National Program for Diabetes. This is one of the national public health prevention priority programmes, developed by DGS (Direção-Geral da Saúde), the Portuguese National Health Service, and which was previously directed by José Manuel Boavida. Cristina Valadas has mostly worked as specialist in the area of diabetes, intervening quite intensely in the Hospital teamwork and in the collaboration between HBA and local health primary care entities, in the scope of UCF – Unidade Coordenadora Funcional da Diabetes (Functional Coordination Unit) ACES VII Loures-Odivelas/Hospital Beatriz Ângelo. Her modern vision of this pathology and of the approach to patient required was once again recognized, this time by the Ministry of Health, now being able to play a more relevant role in the area as director of the National Program for Diabetes. The endocrinologist will continue to run the HBA endocrinology service, in parallel.
