Hospital da Luz Coimbra has a dedicated team for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of movement disorders, consisting of neurologists Ana Morgadinho Carvalho and Diogo Carneiro , and other health professionals, including nurse specialists and physiotherapists. On the World Parkinson’s Day (April 11), the team organized a special session for patients and families, where they answered questions and clarified doubts, besides showing a series of exercises to do at home in order to keep people as active as possible. “A few years ago, we believed that Parkinson’s only arose after 60-65, but today we know that approximately 10% of patients are under 50”, states Ana Morgadinho Carvalho, in a reportage by “Diário de Coimbra”. Therefore, Parkinson’s ceased to be a disease of “the elders”, affecting presently a population “still in a very active stage of life”, she added. The complexity of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s requires the involvement of a multidisciplinary team. This way, it is possible “to optimize treatment”, with an individualized and targeted program, and a permanent and more accurate clinical evaluation, where the regular contact with the families is fundamental.
