The majority of the 78 people that did the free screenings of the Hospital da Luz Setúbal, in the scope of the World Asthma Day celebrations presented diurnal and nocturnal respiratory complains with impact on their quality of life and daily activity. These people were referred to the pneumology and immunoallergology consultations at the hospital. The screenings, conducted by a team of the hospital health professionals on May 7 (the World Asthma Day) and 10, were based on questionnaires that included questions about diurnal and nocturnal breathing symptoms and signs, as well as history of exposure to triggering factors (such as dust, pollen and animal hair, among others). In addition, some of the participants performed spirometry and/or skin sensitivity tests. The evaluation of the answers given, together with the results of the examinations, showed a high number of people with respiratory complaints, as well as shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness and wheezing during the day and at night. Many also presented compromise of the respiratory function and/or skin allergy for some of the allergens tested. Asthma is one of the main chronic respiratory diseases and is estimated to affect about 10% of the Portuguese. Hospital da Luz Setúbal provides the Pneumology and Immunoallergology consultations, aimed at the diagnostic and treatment of asthma.
