On September 29, 2011, the first case of ablation of renal sympathetic activity in the treatment of resistant hypertension was conducted at the Hospital da Luz by a team of Interventional Cardiologists - Francisco Pereira Machado, Manuel de Sousa Almeida e Pedro de Araújo Gonçalves. It the first time this type of procedure was performed in a private health facility , following those conducted in the Hospital of Santa Cruz last July. This innovative treatment for drug-resistant hypertension by catheterization is, briefly, a partial denervation of renal nerve activity (autonomous activity of the sympathetic nervous system) using a catheter that emits radio waves. This project was developed at the Hospital da Luz through collaboration between the Departments of Cardiology and Nephrology . The selection and monitoring of patients is the responsibility of medical nephrologist Patricia Branco, who established a special consult specifically for this purpose.
