Hospital da Luz network cardiologists will organize, next May 21 and 22 , a training course entirely dedicated to echocardiography exams in the diagnostic and follow-up of cardiovascular diseases. This training, destined to health professionals, will be held on webinar platform and has for purpose to share the latest advances that sustain echocardiography as first-line testing in the area. “Echocardiography in the multimodality imaging era: comes alive!” is destined to internists and specialists in Anaesthesia, Cardiology, Imaging, General and Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Intensive Medicine, as well as technicians in Cardiopulmonology, Imaging and Nuclear Cardiology. The second day of the webinar will be entirely dedicated to clinical cases . “Echocardiography is and will continue to be in the future the imaging exam par excellence in cardiology. Applied to all cardiac patients, this is a highly competitive technique compared with other types of imaging exams: it is cheaper and faster, non-invasive, innocuous, and is carried out with the physician near the patient, providing detailed morphologic and functional information with clinical impact in the management of every clinical situation”, highlights Nuno Cardim , coordinator of the Cardiac Imaging – Echocardiography Laboratory, of the Clinical Cardiology Unit and the Centre of Hereditary Cardiac Diseases and Cardiomyopathy at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, and member of the scientific committee and organization of this course. “From the technological point of view”, he adds, “equipment has evolved considerably in the last decade, a good example of these advancements being the techniques of myocardial deformation assessment (strain), which provide a wide wealth of relevant information and are ready to establish themselves in the clinical scenario”. In the whole, cardiac imaging provides answers for the majority of the clinical needs of cardiac patients. On the other hand, it is commonly recognized that an approach by multimodality imaging – that is to say, including echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance, computerized tomography and cardiac nuclear image – is desirable and advisable in the assessment of cardiac patients. The choice of the technique to apply must be based on the specific knowledge of what each technique has to offer, with the specialists in the different imaging techniques collaborating with each other, and the different methods being seen as complementary, not as competing. In this sense, these will be the major topics to approach in this webinar , always on the basis of the practical aspect: What will be the role of echocardiography in 2021, in the era of multimodality imaging? Has this technique been overtaken by the new methods of imaging? Or do the technological advancements (advanced echocardiography, namely strain echocardiogram, transesophageal cardiogram, and myocardial deformation techniques) keep it high, with advantages over other techniques? The Hospital da Luz network of hospitals and clinics has cutting-edge technology and renowned professionals, ensuring a performance of excellence in the area of cardiac imaging .
