The urologist José Preza Fernandes’ team performed, on March 28, in the operating unit from Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim, the first prostate enucleations with GreenLight laser. These surgeries counted with the presence of Enrique Rijo, renowned Spanish urologist, who is an international reference in this technique and the benign prostatic hyperplasia pathology. Prostate enucleation with GreenLight laser is an innovating technique, consisting in the removal of prostate adenoma (for volumes above 60 grams), by minimally invasive method. Similarly to the technique of prostate vaporization with GreenLight laser (for prostates with volumes under 60 grams), it allows faster recovery and earlier hospital discharge, as well as lower risks of haemorrhagic complications. Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim has already these tow techniques available for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. José Preza Fernandes (in the photo, in the centre) is specialized in minimally invasive urologic surgery, practicing at Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim and also in the network’s units of Amarante, Cerveira, Guimarães and Vila Real.
