Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) is organizing, since February 14 until November, a training program for teams from Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental (hospitals Egas Moniz, Santa Cruz and S. Francisco Xavier) and from Hospital da Luz Arrábida, in the scope of ERAS ® Program . This is an innovating clinical program that has for purpose the adoption of the best practices in healthcare providing to patients submitted to surgery (before, during and after), in order to maximize the positive results of the intervention. As an ERAS ® Centre of Excellence, HBA is the only hospital in Portugal qualified to give training in this area to other hospital units – which has already happened in previous years concerning the hospitals of Coimbra, Cascais, Fernando Fonseca (Amadora Sintra) and Hospital da Luz Lisboa. The ERAS ® Program was launched by ERAS ® Society, a non-profitable society established in 2010, with headquarters in Stockholm (Sweden), integrating physicians and other health professionals that had been discussing since 2001 the need to define protocols based on clinical practices with best results. ERAS ® was in the meanwhile developed in some of the best hospitals in Europe and the United States, with quite positive results. The program consists in a multidisciplinary intervention to prepare patients before surgery, with standardization of intra and post-operatory care. The purpose is to get a better and faster recovery, at the same time reducing post-operatory complications and risks associated with extended hospitalization. HBA certification as ERAS ® Centre of Excellence occurred in 2017 . In a first stage, the program was implemented in colorectal cancer surgery, being then extended to other pathologies (such as pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer and, recently, liver cancer), now inclusively being at the base of Luz Saúde project of value-based medicine.
