Transient hepatic elastography, commonly known as Fibroscan® , is an ultrasound exam that allows to evaluate the presence of fibrosis in the liver, its severity, and the level of fat in the liver. Performed via probe, and taking about 10 minutes, the Fibroscan® has the following features : It is painless; Totally non-invasive; Does not use radiation; Does not require specific preparation (only a 4-hour fasting period is recommended before the procedure); The result is immediate. This exam should not be performed in pregnant women, or in pacemaker/defibrillator carriers. In obese patients, it may not be possible to carry out the exam successfully. The Fibroscan® is a very useful exam in the evaluation and follow-up of people with liver diseases , namely in the following situations: Diagnosis of hepatic cirrhosis ; Evaluation of hepatic fibrosis and its severity in multiple hepatic diseases; Chronic viral hepatitis B and C; Non-alcoholic fatty liver ; Alcoholic liver disease; Hemochromatosis; Metabolic and autoimmune diseases; Risk of complications (such as decompensation or hepatocellular carcinoma) in patients with diagnosis of hepatic cirrhosis; Evaluation of the level of fat in the liver (steatosis).
