Increasingly more people are choosing to adopt vegetarianism as food regime, but not knowing how to do it in a balanced way without putting their health at risk. Mónica Santos and Simone Fernandes , Hospital da Luz nutritionists, will give next November 18 the online course “Vegetarian Diets: from essence to practice”, where they will explain the principles of vegetarianism and the rules to follow in the planning of a healthy vegetarian diet. Vegetarianism is a plant-based food regime that excludes meat and fish, but includes a great variety of foods (namely cereals, vegetables, pulses, fruits, seeds, nuts and algae, among others), and which may include other products of animal origin (such as milk, eggs or honey, for instance). Whatever the motives to adopt it, either health, ethical or environmental; the vegetarian diet should be varied and balanced to cover the needs of essential nutrients not produced by the body. This Hospital da Luz course intends to offer a practical and up-to-date approach of vegetarianism in terms of health and sustainable practice , destined to all those who wish to adapt their diet towards a healthy and sustainable vegetarian regime. The participants will learn: To recognize the different types of vegetarian diets; To identify the benefits and risks of the practice of vegetarian diets; To recognize fundamental rules for planning a healthy vegetarian food regime; To distinguish between myths and scientific evidence; To plan a balanced daily vegetarian regime, adequate to their nutritional individual needs.
