These screenings will consist of assessments of health indicators such as blood sugar, blood pressure and BMI, and will be carried out by healthcare professionals from Hospital da Luz. These teams will also be available to provide information about diabetes and answer questions. Diabetes is a chronic disease and, in most cases, a silent one. About 40% of people with diabetes are not diagnosed. Every adult aged 45 or more should take the diabetes screening, even with no apparent overweight or other risk factors. Screening should always be taken, regardless of age, in the case of people with excess weight and at least one additional risk factor – such as, for instance, physical inactivity, first-degree relatives with diabetes, high blood pressure, and altered cholesterol profile. The early diagnosis of diabetes is fundamental. This disease is in fact the main cause of blindness, renal failure, and non-traumatic amputation. In western countries, it has as primary cause the sedentary lifestyle of the population, lack of physical exercise and an excessively caloric diet.
