The gastroenterology service from HBA, directed by specialist physician and university professor, Marília Cravo, was recognized by EUMS (European Union of Medical Specialists) as European center with training competence in the specialty of gastroenterology and hepatology. This recognition as European Training Center was attributed by EUMS, after a complex process of evaluation of the service performed by auditors from that medical organization, which visited the hospital, interviewed interns in training at the service directed by Marília Cravo and gathered all kinds of information on the clinical management of that service, giving special attention to the way the training of young doctors is structured and to the investment made on clinical research. In their final opinion, the auditors, both European specialists in gastroenterology, considered that “the clinical area and of exams, as well as the areas of education and training are particularly strong in this service (…). The quality of training is high providing the trainees with experience in a wide number of gastroenterology and liver pathologies”. The European recognition now received by HBA in this specialty corresponds to the training competence attributed by the Portuguese Association of Doctors, which allows the recognized services to train specialty interns. “Interns, Portuguese or foreigner, taking their training as gastroenterology specialists here, know now that we also have European competence. In practical terms, it means we were recognized to have a high level of training quality, compatible with the best European clinical and scientific standards”, explained Marília Cravo.
