The General Surgery team from Hospital da Luz Lisboa was distinguished for the best oral communication in the 29 th National Congress of Coloproctology, which took place on November 21-22, in Figueira da Foz. Its authors are André Caiado (in the photo above, receiving the prize), Beatriz Costeira , José Assunção Gonçalves , José Damião Ferreira and Rui Maio . Entitled “ Sacral neuromodulation in the treatment of fecal incontinence: a case-study of 26 patients ”, the communication analyses the good results obtained through this procedure, which has been performed since 2015 in the units of Hospital da Luz Lisboa and Oeiras, and in Hospital Beatriz Ângelo. Sacral neuromodulation is a minimally invasive technique consisting in the nervous stimulation of sacral roots, through the insertion of an electrode percutaneously. It has allowed excellent results in the treatment of patients with fecal incontinence : in this series, therapeutic success was achieved in over 90% of patients, who improved significantly their degree of incontinence. This congress is organized by the Portuguese Society of Coloproctology , which brings together gastroenterologists and surgeons dedicated to Coloproctology.
