The Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) was ranked fourth in the list of best public hospitals, as published by the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP). It was only surpassed by three of the largest hospital complexes in the country – S. João in Porto, the Coimbra University Hospital and S. Francisco Xavier in Lisbon. HBA's ranking is further strengthened by the fact that it was classified in first place nationally for the treatment of pediatrics diseases, second in orthopedics and fifth in the treatment of respiratory diseases (pneumology). This is the first time that the provision of care at HBA has analyzed for this ranking, which has been published for almost 10 years. This ENSP ranking is the result of a study carried out by the researcher Carlos Costa which assesses internment at public hospitals and the quality and effectiveness of the care provided. Different types of indicators are taken into consideration such as mortality, complications and readmissions. According to the study's author, hospitals are compared adjusting the different size and degree of differentiation at each unit.
