The Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) came second place in the National School of Public Health (ENSP) rankings of public hospital provision in 2014. In first place was the Hospital São João in Porto, and right behind the HBA were the University of Coimbra Hospital Center and Lisbon North Hospital Center, which includes the Hospital de Santa Maria. Therefore, in the top four places were the three biggest university hospitals in the country and the HBA. It was the second time that the Hospital São João came first in this ranking. HBA climbed two places on the previous year. In 2013, the first year that the HBA had been evaluated in this way, the ENSP assessment ranked the Hospital Beatriz Ângelo in fourth place. The results of this 'Performance Evaluation of Public Hospitals (Hospitalization) in Mainland Portugal (2014)', a study coordinated by researcher Carlos Costa, show that within the sector as a whole, the HBA excelled in the treatment of Digestive, Musculoskeletal and Respiratory Diseases. Out of a total of 17 categories evaluated, the Hospital Beatriz Ângelo came among the top five in eight. The ENSP ranking is the result of assessing all cases of hospitalization in terms of mortality, complications in care and readmissions. HBA also at the top of IASIST The Hospital Beatriz Ângelo is also featured in the ranking exercise carried out by IASIST, one of the Spanish multinational experts in health care evaluation. According to the results now published, the HBA was in the top three Group C hospitals, which are public hospitals of a similar size and type. In this group, the winner was the Tâmega and Sousa Hospital Center, followed closely by the HBA and the Entre Douro e Vouga Hospital Center. This ranking, which rewards excellence in hospitals and enjoys the distinguished patronage of the Minister of Health, analyzes the performance of health units in terms of health care, efficiency and appropriacy. This time around, 39 hospitals within the Portuguese National Health Service were voluntarily submitted for assessment.
