A room, a team of doctors and a short deadline (45 minutes) to be met: will they manage to save the patient in time? This is the challenge of Hospital Getaway – Clinical Escape Game , a game designed by doctors for doctors, destined to train teams in solving unexpected, critical or emerging clinical cases, that can happen in real life. It was designed by Nobox with the support of UpHill , two Portuguese start-ups that develop methodologies and software for the enhancement of quality in healthcare providing. Hospital Getaway – Clinical Escape Game: Evolves in an environment similar in all respects to that of a hospital routine , with the difference that here there are no real patients; It takes place in the Simulation Centre of Hospital da Luz Learning Health , where through a simulation software the participants can access the clinical history of the “patient”, request exams, analyse results, prescribe medication and carry out all other tasks they would do in a real context; In each session, a team of three to five doctors must ensure the “patient” the best clinical care, while facing the constraints and mishaps that come along, depending on the clinical situation; It potentiates the training of clinical reasoning; It confronts the participants with situations where they may have to perform one or more clinical actions, in one of the over 100 simulators available at the Simulation Centre; It is adaptable to the (clinical and non-clinical) learning needs and objectives of the organizations and teams. Therefore, it can be customized for specific training events or even set up in other locations – namely, for instance, in congresses. To overcome the challenge of this educational game, it is necessary to have knowledge and clinical skills, but also to be able to work in a team in a coordinated and effective manner, so as to rise to the challenges and resolve the traps created in the scenery of the game. In the end, the team receives an analysis report, structured in accordance with the behavioural competences and performance observed during the game. “This way, we can deliver each person valuable tips to enhance the behavioural competences that are fundamental in daily practice in health, but also an analysis of the team’s clinical performance, comparing what was done with the best practice”, explains Diogo Silva, cofounder of Nobox. “In the case of these ‘serious games’ applied to education, the concept is simple: to use the principles of the game – like curiosity, competition and challenges – to offer an immersive and engaging training experience, leading to the acquisition of specific skills. The applicability of these methodologies is infinite, since they can be designed around any predefined goal”, he adds. Registration online
