Hospital da Luz Setúbal has a new high-resolution equipment for anoscopy exams, performed in the Consultation of Gastroenterology – Proctology . With this equipment, it is possible to identify more precisely lesions imperceptible to the naked eye, that could indicate precursor lesions of anal gland cancer or malignant lesions in earlier stage. The anoscopy is a diagnostic exam where the anus, anal gland and rectum distal portion are assessed. The goal is to identify eventual causes for current complaints and characterize lesions associated with a malignant or benign anal pathology. During an anoscopy, it is possible to get samples of tissues for anal cytology, for instance to identify the presence of altered cells or the presence of the genotype of the human papillomavirus (HPV), that affects about 45% of the sexually active population and which is considered the main risk factor associated with anal gland cancer. The anal gland carcinoma is a neoplasm of increasing incidence, being associated to significant morbidity and mortality.
