Hospital da Luz Arrábida performed recently with success its first robotic surgery to treat a patient with rectovaginal profound endometriosis, a severe form of the disease. The intervention was conducted by Hélder Ferreira , gynaecologist with vast experience in advanced and robotic laparoscopic surgery, recognized by his work in cases of complex endometriosis. Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecologic disease affecting a significant number of women in reproductive age, causing intense pelvic pain, infertility, and a deep impact on quality of life. In cases of profound endometriosis, particularly with rectovaginal involvement, which is more severe, surgical approach requires high technical precision and detailed anatomical knowledge. In this context, explains Hélder Ferreira, “robotic surgery represents a decisive advancement, since it offers higher precision, amplified three-dimensional visualization of the area to intervene and higher security in the dissection of noble structures, as well as enhanced ergonomical and movement control by the surgeon”. The patient operated in this first intervention at Hospital da Luz Arrábida experienced a quick recovery, and reduced pain in the post-operative stage, being able to resume shortly after her daily routines – all benefits frequently associated with robotic surgery in qualified and experienced centres. Hospital da Luz Arrábida was the first hospital in the North region to perform robotic surgery, in 2017. This surgery in a case of rectovaginal profound endometriosis represents a milestone in our history as reference centre in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery in the North region. “It demonstrates our ability to offer differentiated and less invasive treatments with clear clinical gains for the patient”, further adds Hélder Ferreira. Hospital da Luz Arrábida thus reaffirms its commitment towards technological innovation, clinical differentiation, investment in highly specialized teams, and patient-centred healthcare.
