The unit of Cardiovascular Intervention from Hospital da Luz Coimbra, led by cardiologist Marco Costa , has a multidisciplinary team integrating experienced professionals and cutting-edge technology, and is at the forefront of interventions that allow to treat complex cardiac problems more and more in a minimally invasive manner. In this May, “ the Month of the Heart ”, the activity of this unit is highlighted in a reportage by Diário de Coimbra . Since it was created, in 2019, 200 procedures have already been performed – such as catheterisms, coronary angioplasties, transcatheter aortic valve implant (TAVI) and mitral clip insert, among others. “Our offer is complementary to that provided by the National Health Service and is destined to all those who wish and may benefit from it, with professionals, equipment and inpatient conditions of high-quality”, stresses Marco Costa, assuming the goal of being a unit of reference in the Central region. In this unit, pioneer interventions have already been performed, namely the first transcatheter aortic valve implant. Cardiovascular diseases remain the main cause of death and morbidity in Portugal. In the case of patients treated in the Unit of Cardiovascular Intervention, the most common is coronary disease – resulting from the accumulation of fat deposits, fibrous tissue and calcification (plaques) inside the coronary arteries that carry the blood to the heart –, that continues to have high prevalence among the population. “Hospital da Luz Coimbra in the forefront of interventional cardiology”
