Hospital da Luz Coimbra performed, on 16 June, the first orthopaedic surgeries assisted by robotic device, for knee prosthesis placement. “The robotic system has been assuming a prominent role in medicine, particularly in orthopaedic surgery. These systems allow surgeons to perform interventions with higher precision, adapting surgery to the specific anatomical characteristics of each patient”, explains orthopaedist Armando Pires , who led the team inaugurating this type of surgeries. The introduction of this robotic device in the clinical practise of orthopaedics operates “a real change of paradigm”, highlights the specialist, adding: “The application of the robotic system represents a significant advance in the individualization of surgical care to patients submitted to knee surgery, with an impact on quality of life. With the help of this device, it is possible to improve alignment and positioning of the implant, which translates into better functional results, higher durability of the prosthesis, and faster recovery”, he further adds. Higher precision in prosthesis placement – therefore, better perspectives in terms of adaptation and functioning – less blood loss and even greater benefits in more complex and difficult cases, for the precision allowed by the system, are among the major advantages for the patient. The robotic system is portable comprising a monitor, two TV cameras, sensors capturing 3D images, and a computer. It allows the surgeon to plan the surgery with maximum level of precision, satisfying the predefined parameters. The surgical plan is thus personalized, based on the digital 3D model of the knee produced by the robot. This system guides the surgeon during the operation, in the execution of the necessary cuts and other procedures, which are performed with much higher precision than in conventional surgeries. The same applies to prosthesis positioning / placement. It can be used in total or partial surgeries of the knee, revision surgeries of the knee, and also in hip surgery for prosthesis placement. “The integration of this cutting-edge technology in Hospital da Luz Coimbra ensures our patients the best treatment possible, enabling access to the best technology in health”, concludes the orthopaedist.
