Eduardo Carpinteiro , the coordinator of Hospital da Luz Lisboa Unit of Elbow and Shoulder, and André Barros , from the same unit, performed last June 4 two shoulder tendon regeneration surgeries applying the innovating bio-inductor Regeneten , which were live-streamed for orthopaedists all over Europe, in the context of a training session promoted by Smith-Nephew. It is worth recalling that the HL Lisboa Unit of Elbow and Shoulder was chosen to be the first unit to use this technique in Portugal, in August 2020. The live-streaming of the surgeries allowed Eduardo Carpinteiro and André Barros to share their experience in this unique rotator cuff (group of muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint) repair technique, offering the specialists watching an overreaching view of the procedure – and the possibility to ask questions at the same time, as if they were in the operating room. Regeneten is a bioactive technology that was introduced and certified in Europe in 2020, having previously been used with good results in over 20 thousand surgeries in the United States, Canada and Australia. How does Regeneten works: It consists in the application of a derivative of bovine Achilles tendon, with high degree of purification, extremely porous and with optimal orientation of collagen fibres type I. These features stimulate a natural response of the body, inducing new cellular growth (regeneration) of the tendon; The implant thus inserted is gradually refitted along the following six months, leaving a layer of new tissue similar to the healthy tendon and thus enhancing the thickness of the remaining tendon; The recently induced tendinous tissue shares the load with the original tendon, reducing the excessive strain that causes the degeneration of the rotator cuff.
