Hospital da Luz Lisboa has reinforced its Orthopedics team in the area of foot and ankle diseases, also expanding the surgical services available. In this new stage, under the coordination of João Vide , the Foot and Ankle Unit focuses on the continual evolution of advanced surgical techniques, including complex reconstructive surgeries – namely the Ilizarov technique, minimally invasive bunion correction (MIS), arthroscopic arthrodesis, and percutaneous osteotomy –, procedures providing better functional results for patients and faster recovery . Orthopedist of recognized prestige, João Vide combines clinical experience and teaching activity at Católica Medical School and the Lisbon University Faculty of Medicine, presently preparing his doctoral degree in Medicine focused on biomechanics and sports traumatology, namely on Achilles tendon rupture. In addition to Azeredo Pais – an orthopaedic surgeon trained at leading centres such as the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (Oxford) and Robert Jones Agnes Hunt Hospital (United Kingdom), with extensive experience in foot, ankle and hip surgery – the team now has two new professionals: João Caetano , post-graduate in Sports Medicine, international fellow of the European Society of Foot and Ankle, with vast experience in complex traumatology and minimally invasive surgery of the foot and ankle. He is a trainer in advanced courses on foot and ankle and lecturer in numerous national and international congresses. Emanuel Seiça , author of awarded clinical research projects, has devoted himself to minimally invasive and reconstructive surgery, holding fellowships of reference in the USA, Canada, Switzerland, and France, this being the focus developed in his prospective doctorate thesis. He also teaches at Algarve University Faculty of Medicine. The excellence and dynamism of this unit have already earned the recognition of the Orthopedics service as a European center of reference for training, by the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and soon also by the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS). This way, Hospital da Luz Lisboa reinforces its positioning of reference in the specialized care of foot and ankle, promoting the alliance between experience, modernity, and innovation.
