Constant or excessive tearing is a frequent complaint in ophthalmology, being caused by recurrent infections of the tear duct or by obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. At Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim , these cases are treated through endoscopic laser surgery by the team coordinated by ophthalmologist Manuel Domingues and otorhinolaryngologist Carolina Serôdio . Known by its medical designation of laser-assisted endoscopic transcanicular DCR surgery , this technique allows to treat simultaneously: Epiphora, that is to say, excessive tearing (due to an excessive production of tears, inadequate drainage, or both); Any existing nasal sinus pathology that might contribute to an exacerbation of the symptoms. When there is low obstruction of the tear ducts, it is necessary to create a new tear drainage path between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity, the most effective and safe procedure being the transcanicular DCR (or dacryocystorhinostomy), using laser associated to nasal endoscopic viewing. At Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim, the team of Manuel Domingues and Carolina Serôdio has already carried out over 400 of such surgeries . The laser-assisted endoscopic transcanicular DCR surgery: Is a minimally invasive, simple, safe and effective technique; Uses a diode laser; Is indicated for adults and children; Is performed with general anaesthesia or endovenous sedation; Does not require hospitalization (in most cases); Is basically painless and has an easy postoperative period, the patient being able to rapidly resume most daily activities.
