Diabetes is a chronic and, most of the time, silent disease. Around 40% of people with diabetes do not have the disease diagnosed. Any adult aged 45 or over should be screened for diabetes, even if they are not overweight or have other risk factors. Screening should always be carried out, regardless of age, in the case of people who are overweight and have at least one additional risk factor – such as, for example, physical inactivity, a first-degree family member with diabetes, high blood pressure and an altered cholesterol profile. Diagnosing diabetes in a timely manner is essential. This disease is, for example, the main cause of blindness, kidney failure and non-traumatic amputation. In Western countries, its main cause is the population's sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise and an excessively high-calorie diet.
