The Intensive/Intermediate Care Unit (UCI) from Hospital da Luz Coimbra starts functioning today, October 29, now being the only private hospital in the central region to offer intensive care. “This new service represents a fundamental factor of guarantee of quality and safety in the most differentiated care providing, that is already available at Hospital da Luz Coimbra”, states the specialist in intensive medicine, Jorge Pimentel, coordinator of Hospital da Luz Coimbra UCI, who justifies: “The increasing pathologies and comorbidities that may condition a diminished physiological support, compel to a constant surveillance of patients’ vital functions, therefore it is essential to work in a context of intensive care unit”. The UCI, located on ground 2 of the Hospital, is equipped with seven beds, all with invasive and non-invasive monitoring capacity, integrated in three individual boxes and two equipped with invasive and non-invasive artificial ventilation. The medical team comprises specialists in internal medicine and anesthesiology, most of them also specialized in intensive medicine, and the nursing team counts with professionals with large practical experience in intensive care units. “The existence of an Intensive/Intermediate Care Unit in our Hospital is a fundamental step in the clinical differentiation and safety of patients, who look for high quality medical services. To have such a unit functioning 24 hours a day will allow us to improve significantly the quality of medical and surgical treatment at Hospital da Luz Coimbra”, refers Filipe Caseiro Alves, clinical director of this hospital unit.
