A team headed by cardiologist Marco Costa performed, on January 29, the first cardiac catheterization in the Hemodynamic Unit from Hospital da Luz Coimbra. This is the only private hospital in the centre region to have angiography equipment, allowing cardiac procedures in the scope of interventional cardiology. “We have successfully performed the first catheterization, followed by coronary intervention, thus inaugurating the Hemodynamic Unit, devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of coronary, valvular, congenital and peripheral artery disease”, states Marco Costa, while explaining the procedure: “Angiography and endovascular therapy is a minimally invasive and advantageous treatment. Since it assesses the anatomy and the presence of lesions, it allows the treatment of those lesions via less invasive procedures, thus reducing complications, compared to direct surgery”. The Hemodynamic Unit from Hospital da Luz Coimbra is available to all coronary patients and applies the most recent structural interventional cardiology techniques – such as, for instance, percutaneous valves implantation. Besides hemodynamic procedures, Marco Costa also ensures the consultation of Interventional Cardiology. “This is one more step towards the consolidation of services offered by Hospital da Luz Coimbra. The Hemodynamic Unit is integrated in the ambitious clinical program that we have in the area of cardiology and is already equipped with the latest technology, which implied a large investment, and counting with a team of highly experienced health professionals”, declares, on the other hand, Pedro Beja Afonso, the hospital director. “With the Unit of Intensive/Intermediate Care, we can ensure patients total clinical safety in the post-clinical procedures”, he adds.
