Balance disorders are quite frequent, being estimated to affect about 15% to 30% of adults. In the context of the activities developed near the community, the Otorhinolaryngology Service of Hospital da Luz Setúbal will offer, once again, free screenings of balance problems, vertigo and dizziness, open to the general population, between the 15 and 19 May, all those interested being required to schedule an appointment previously. “It is not the same to feel dizzy, have vertigo or feel loss of balance, but they are often mistaken. The problem must be thoroughly studied, for there are over 300 causes”, explains Rosa Castillo Ramos , otorhinolaryngologist coordinating the area of vertigo and balance pathologies at Hospital da Luz Setúbal. The prevalence of vertigo increases with age, affecting approximately 40% of people over 40 at some point in life. Vertigo crises can be incapacitating, preventing the individual from working or even from getting up or leaving home. Falls may be frequent and with severe consequences. In a quarter of cases, the cause of vertigo is vestibular, meaning that it is related with diseases of the inner ear. If you are feeling balance disorders and dizziness, take this screening.
