João Moreira Pinto, Hospital da Luz paediatric surgeon in the units of Arrábida and Guimarães, was designated member of the Education Committee of the European Society of Paediatric Endoscopic Surgery (ESPES). This is the first time a Portuguese is designated to this position. Created in 2004 by surgeons of 12 European countries, ESES (European Society of Paediatric Endoscopic Surgery) is the major scientific society in this field, specifically dedicated to minimally invasive surgery in children. Its mission is to improve and disseminate the most innovating techniques in the area, as well as to promote research and professional training. Therefore, besides organizing training workshops in laparoscopy, it supports international courses and holds a scientific congress every year, the next one scheduled for September 11 and 13, in Vicenza (Italy). João Moreira Pinto is a paediatric surgeon at Hospital da Luz since 2013. Minimally invasive surgery in paediatrics allows procedures involving less pain for children and a quicker return to daily activity, with unnoticeable scars. At Hospital da Luz Arrábida and Hospital da Luz Guimarães, inguinal and epigastric hernias, appendicitis, varicocele and undescended testicles are examples of children diseases, that can be treated using these techniques.
