José Ferreira Mendes , Hospital da Luz ophthalmology, obtained the title of FEBOS-CR – fellow by the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO), Subspeciality in Cataract and Refractive Surgery – which certifies surgeons with superior knowledge and experience in this highly specialized area. Developed by EBO and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), this certification is granted upon rigorous examination. “It is a great prestige to bear the title of FEBOS-CR. It represents my permanent concern with quality, differentiation, and innovation in the field of cataract surgery and refractive surgery”, states José Ferreira Mendes. “As I see my clinical practice recognized by this diploma, I can not fail to stress the conditions provided by the Hospital da Luz units I work in (Guimarães, Póvoa de Varzim and Vila Real), in a constant search for modern and technologically advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment , the network of differentiated colleagues ophthalmologists enabling a complete care in every ophthalmology subspeciality, and also a team of technical and administrative staff and operating theatre nurses that give me the necessary tranquillity to focus on what is really important, which is the patients who choose me as their physician”, he adds. The FEBOS-CR certification “is a particularly demanding process involving many years of dedication and preparation”, further explains José Ferreira Mendes, who obtained the title on September 11. The jury selects candidates that prove to be surgeons capable of dealing with a varied combination of cases and that are willing to be evaluated on their expertise and knowledge, through a rigorous theoretical exam and interviews with leading figures in European and world ophthalmology. “Once admitted as candidate, an exam is conducted with the duration of approximately one day, comprising a theoretical component of 250 questions and four oral components in the form of interviews evaluated by ophthalmologists, most of them making or having made part of ESCRS boards”, he explains. Since it was created, eight years ago, the FEBO-CR title was obtained by 70 European ophthalmologic surgeons (five of them Portuguese), who form a community with periodic meetings of knowledge and cases sharing. Hospital da Luz and Luz Saúde express their gratitude to José Ferreira Mendes for all his commitment and dedication and wishes him the greatest success.
