At the Hospital da Luz Coimbra Oncology Center , all patients diagnosed with cancer are evaluated in a multidisciplinary commission, comprising doctors from different specialties, as explained in a recent reportage on Diário de Coimbra. From this evaluation follows a plan of care adapted to the needs of each patient, who will be monitored periodically. Coordinated by Nascimento Costa , the Oncology Center team includes oncologists, surgeons, radio-oncologists, hematologists, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and psychologists, among other professionals. The periodic multidisciplinary meetings for case discussion, states that specialist, “follow the national and international protocols consensually accepted and approved”, ensuring quality assessments. The approach is thus integrated and specialized, assistance going beyond cancer treatment, “also englobing physical, emotional, nutritional and social support to the patient and respective family”. The Center, with a special vocation to gastrointestinal cancer, offers an innovative consultation in the area of liver tumors, hepatic metastases, and pancreatic tumors, ensured simultaneously by physicians Emanuel Furtado and Filipe Caseiro Alves .
