The Oncology Centre of Hospital da Luz Setúbal will hold, on October 15, with the support of Setúbal Municipality, the 2 nd session of Oncotalks, conferences on cancer, open to the general public. Integrated in the world initiative of Pink October – month dedicated to breast cancer prevention – this conference is free of charge, but with previous registration required. Breast cancer is the most frequent oncologic disease and the first cause of death by cancer in women, in Portugal, with about 9 thousand new cases being detected every year. With an early diagnosis and adequate treatment, breast cancer is curable in the majority of patients, making it ever more important to promote the awareness of the population on how to prevent, early diagnose and efficiently treat cancer and dully follow up patients . The conference will approach the following topics: “Living with cancer”, with several patients bearing testimony on the impact of cancer in their personal and professional life, the challenges they have had (and still have) to face and how these are dealt with and overcome; “Taking care of caretakers”, focusing on the difficulties of informal caretakers, and counting with interventions by psychiatrist Gudia da Ponte (Hospital de Nossa Senhora do Rosário) and psychologist Francisco Almeida ; “Needs and resources”, reflecting on “what is missing, what works and how to improve” concerning the treatment of patients with breast cancer. This discussion will count with the participation of oncologist Inês Oliveira (Hospital de São Bernardo), nurse Carolina Cruz, professor Margarida Sequeira (Health School, Setúbal Polytechnic Institute), physiologist Luís Simão , senologist Ana Isabel Cruz , José Paulo Lucena (coordinator of Setúbal’s Support Group of the Portuguese League Against Cancer), Jorge Espírito Santo (ex-president of the Oncology College of the National Medical Association), and nurse Duarte Costa (Hospital de São Bernardo). The session will be held in interaction with the audience and will be conducted by João Rato (coordinator of the Oncology Centre of Hospital da Luz Setúbal), and Teresa Marques (director of Oncology of Hospital de São Bernardo). There will also be time for a tribute to Teresa Guerra, former director of Imagiology at Hospital de São Bernardo. Register and participate!
