Hospital da Luz Lisboa received accreditation of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), as a healthcare provider of excellence in Secondary Prevention / Cardiac Rehabilitation and Sports Cardiology. “This accreditation represents the recognition of excellence of the healthcare provided in these two areas by Hospital da Luz Lisboa, where technical differentiation and experience of human resources make all the difference”, highlights Hélder Dores , coordinator of the areas of Clinical Cardiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Sports Cardiology. Hospital da Luz Lisboa is presently: The first center in Portugal accredited in Sports Cardiology by EAPC , which to the present day only recognized other seven centers in Europe. The third center in Portugal accredited by EAPC in Secondary Prevention / Cardiac Rehabilitation , of a total of 15 centers recognized by this association. EAPC is an association created within the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), multidisciplinary and having for goal the promotion of excellence in research, clinical practice, cardiovascular health education and politics, secondary prevention, cardiac rehabilitation, and sports cardiology. In that sense, it developed an accreditation program to evaluate the quality of healthcare provided in cardiovascular prevention centers all over Europe. The goal of this European program is to establish standards for the practice of preventive cardiology, thus improving the quality of healthcare provided and cardiovascular health. Hospital da Luz Lisboa has a program of Cardiac Rehabilitation , englobing every stage of this intervention, with a multidisciplinary team, being particularly devoted to patients having suffered acute myocardial infarction, after cardiac surgery or cardiac insufficiency. Sports Cardiology in this Hospital, on the other hand, is already a national and international reference, both in clinical and educational terms: It is devoted to the cardiac evaluation of professional and recreational athletes, being responsible for the precompetitive evaluation in several sports clubs and federations. Besides these evaluations, the Sports Cardiology consultation allows detecting potential cardiovascular diseases in athletes, particularly in the presence of symptoms induced by physical exercise or risk factors. Having available at the hospital all the diagnostic means necessary, it enables the individualized prescription of exercise and the establishment of therapeutical guiding in the presence of cardiovascular disease.
