More than half of the 45 people who took the screening at Hospital da Luz Setúbal on World Sleep Day, March 15, revealed trouble sleeping, with negative consequences in terms of personal performance and quality of life. Those persons were referred to a specific sleep consultation at the Hospital. The screening was based on questionnaires applied by a team of the hospital, including questions about symptoms and diurnal / nocturnal signs related to sleep, as well as the occurrence of daytime sleepiness. “From the assessment of the answers given, it turned out that a high number of individuals have trouble sleeping, which is reflected on functioning and performance throughout the day, with ultimate impact in the quality of life”, explains Amélia Feliciano, pulmonologist from Hospital da Luz Setúbal. The most recent scientific knowledge indicates an association between sleep disorders, such as fatigue and snoring, and certain diseases. The most common is the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, a respiratory disease that can entail serious cardiovascular problems. Hospital da Luz Setúbal has available a sleep and snoring consultation, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related with sleep disorders. More information and appointments here
