Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) physician, Lia Marques, specialist in Internal Medicine with competence in geriatrics, r eceived the award Prémio Nunes Correa Verdades de Faria 2019 , granted by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa , last July 5, in the category of ‘Progress of Medicine in its Application to the Elderly’. Lia Marques was distinguished for her work to «improve the quality of life and autonomy of the elderly», that she develops daily at HBA , integrated in the team of Internal Medicine of this hospital, being the hallmark of her professional path. Among other projects, t he physician is in the genesis of the Unit of Orthogeriatrics from Hospital Beatriz Ângelo , a multidisciplinary team in operation since November 2018, and whose purpose is to join forces so that patients of over 65 years arriving at the HBA emergency room with fracture of the femur proximal extremity can be operated promptly, are hospitalized only for the time strictly necessary and leave the hospital in the best possible functional state and autonomy, with adequate rehabilitation and involving family and other care providers in the process, whenever possible. The award Prémio Nunes Correa Verdades de Faria is granted yearly by SCML and distinguishes, in different areas, personalities that stood out in the work and research developed in three fields: care providing to vulnerable elderly, progress of medicine for the old people and treatment of heart diseases. Besides HBA physician, also received the SCML award, Maria de Lourdes Pereira Miguel, from Centro Social Paroquial de S. Nicolau, in the field of ‘Care and Affection Given to Vulnerable Elderly’, for the implementation of the project «More Proximity, Better Life», which fights against loneliness and isolation of the elderly; and physician Pedro Marques da Silva, specialist in Clinical Pharmacology with competence in Geriatrics, in the category of ‘Progress in the Treatment of Heart Diseases’, for the work developed towards the reduction of the burden of cardiovascular disease in the elderly.
