Sleeping well and sufficiently is fundamental for health and welfare, which is something to be learned right from childhood. In this sense, on World Sleep Day, March 14, a team from Hospital da Luz Setúbal talked about the theme with primary school children (1 st to 4 th grades) of Escola Básica dos Arcos, and also with teachers and non-teaching staff. The session destined to students took place in the format of storytelling and play, where children had to answer questions about the rules to a good sleep hygiene. The following rules were namely highlighted: getting up and going to bed at the same time, everyday (preferably by 9 p.m.), putting aside TV, phone/tablet, video games or music before going to bed, dimming the light in the bedroom, and reading a book or listening to a story. “Children of these ages are true sponges absorbing knowledge. So, we thought that it would be a good initiative to explain these rules to them, that they could then share with parents and promote good behaviours concerning the sleep of everyone”, explains Andreia Neves, pneumology and sleep hygiene technician. For teachers and non-teaching staff, the Hospital da Luz team prepared a quiz, where questions on sleep were posed to the audience. A presentation was also made on sleep hygiene rules, how sleep promotes health and quality of life, with a strong focus on its impact on children’s growth and development.
