About 200 students of the 7 th and 8 th grades of St. Peter’s International School , in Palmela, received on December 15 a training session on Basic Life Support (BLS), promoted by Hospital da Luz Setúbal . In the course of the initiative “Aprender a salvar vidas” (Learn how to save lives), the students had the opportunity to watch a demonstration on how to ask for help in emergency situations, besides practising BLS techniques in mannequins. The goal of these training sessions is to get everyone a little more prepared to deal with situations of emergency – namely in case of cardiorespiratory arrest – and able to provide the first aid that can make a difference when someone’s life is at risk. On average, every 90 seconds, one person suffers a cardiorespiratory arrest, and the chances of survival depend on how soon the BLS manoeuvres are applied. This was another initiative developed by Hospital da Luz Setúbal in recent years at St Peter’s School, viewing to promote health literacy and raise awareness for the adoption of healthy life styles .
