Stroke, the scientific journal of the American Heart Association and one of the most respected in the world in the field of cerebrovascular disease , published on September 12 an opinion article in which Sérgio Barra, cardiologist from Hospital da Luz network in Amarante, Arrábida, Guimarães and Porto, is the first author. The article explains why it is very difficult to demonstrate that the catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation reduces the risk of stroke , although it’s logical to do so. In the conclusions it is argued that the medical community should focus its attention on the proven benefits of ablation, reduction of cardiovascular mortality and hospitalization: “Pragmatic discussion on the long-term value of atrial fibrillation ablation should depart from a stroke-centered approach and meet the potential reduction of cardiovascular mortality and hospitalization”.
