Susana Lopes , Hospital da Luz Póvoa de Varzim gastroenterologist, was elected president of the Portuguese Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SPED). Founded in 1979, SPED is a non-profit scientific association of public interest, that gathers physicians and other health professionals working or interested in the area of digestive endoscopy, in Portugal. With a doctoral degree in gastroenterology, teaching at Porto University School of Medicine and exercising as hospital assistant at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João, the doctor was elected by her peers to preside the institution for the next biennium (2023-2025). “To promote the development of digestive endoscopy, fostering the creation of multicenter projects and the collaboration with similar societies, as well as investing on literacy in health and contributing for the establishment of standards of training and practice in digestive endoscopy” are, she explains, the priorities of the tenure. SPED has for main goals to promote the development of digestive endoscopy at the service of the population’s health, divulge the upgrading of ideas, knowledge and work in the field of digestive endoscopy, foster research in the area, promote national and international exchange between professionals, and train physicians and technicians.
