It is estimated that one million Portuguese, mostly women, suffer from thyroid disorders and that about half the cases are still undiagnosed. On May 25, the World Thyroid Day, Teresa Dionísio , radiologist from the Imaging Centre of Hospital da Luz Guimarães, will be available to perform free screenings on people with symptoms indicative of possible thyroid disease. The thyroid is an endocrine gland, located in the neck, that produces hormones with different essential functions, such as the regulation of metabolism and temperature, growth and body development. The diseases of the thyroid are often “silent”. The screening for thyroid diseases should be taken by people with any of the following symptoms: Difficulty swallowing food / drinks / saliva; Voice changes (namely roughness); Swelling / nodule in the neck; Physical alterations of the neck. If this is the case, don’t wait any longer and schedule a screening.
