The introduction of the baby to solid foods should ideally occur around 6 months, depending on the baby’s maturity and chewing ability. The change in the diet of the baby after a period of exclusive breast-feeding and the Baby-Led Weaning method (BLW) are the topic of a workshop organized by Hospital da Luz Clínica de Odivelas, and given by nutritionist Ana Rita Silva . The Complementary Diet Workshop – Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) is 2 hours long and will be held every month, starting next May 3, in webinar format. It is destined to couples who await the birth of a child, mothers/fathers and caregivers of children up to 2 years old. At the end of the course, they should be able to apply the BLW method, knowing all the benefits, risks, precautions and rules, as well as examples of meals. In the Baby-Led Weaning method (BLW): As the name implies, it is the baby himself who guides his diet and the milk weaning; Among the reported benefits, are, for instance, a lower risk of obesity (for the baby controls what he eats), a higher autonomy of the baby, the contact with a wider variety of foods and less problems with foods consistency; There are rules to be taken into account, mostly due to the possibility of choking, but also due to the risk of the baby not eating enough nutrients for his development. In this workshop, different topics will be approached, namely: how to offer foods to the baby (traditional method, BLW, or mixed method), which foods to offer and how to prepare them adequately (cut, consistency and texture), how to recognize the signs of hunger and satiety, gag reflex and choking.
