The units of Hospital da Luz Arrábida, Porto and Santa Maria da Feira will offer, on May 29 and 31, free screenings destined to smokers and ex-smokers, to assess smoking habits and the risk of associated diseases, such as lung cancer and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The initiative will be developed by the team of the Pulmonology Service, in the context of celebration of the World No Tobacco Day (May 31). Along the screenings, participants will be invited to answer questionnaires in order to assess their profile of tobacco consumption, nicotine dependence, risk of respiratory diseases, and motivation to quit smoking. Our professionals will also be available to clarify any doubts on the matter. Remember: All tobacco products are harmful to health and there is no safe exposure threshold. The effects of tobacco consumption are the main cause of avoidable death, not only for the smoker, but also for non-smokers exposed to smoking. In Portugal, 10% of deaths are due to tobacco (diseases caused / aggravated by tobacco consumption or exposure to smoking). For each cigarette smoked, eight minutes of life are lost, on average. Quit smoking, at any age, brings multiple benefits, namely on the physical level (enhancement of taste and smell senses, reduction of the risk of disease), psychological level (self-esteem improvement, reinforcing individual skills), and on socio-economic level (improvement of the family budget and social acceptance). Hospital da Luz Arrábida has developed a program of Screening and Monitoring of Lung Cancer destined to smokers and ex-smokers. Keeping your lungs under surveillance and getting an early diagnosis can save your life. Take part in the screenings! Dates and schedules: (attendance by order of arrival)
